Tour Details

Wayoutback offers the adventure traveller an authentic outback camping safari with a touch of style and quality. We'll show you all the "must see" places like Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) and Watarrka (Kings Canyon) and, as importantly, we'll give you the opportunity to really experience the desert.Bush camping, eating quality food cooked over a campfire and sleeping under the clearest southern stars you can imagine. We'll add a more adventurous element to the trip, leaving the sealed road behind for a typical outback dirt road.

If that's not outback enough, we then head 'wayoutback' 4-Wheel driving on bush tracks, across riverbeds and over sand dunes boldly going where no other tours dare.

One of the most important aspects of Wayoutback is the calibre of our guides. They are among the best in Central Australia through their enthusiasm and ability to bring people together to have the best time.

This is backed up with extensive local knowledge of land, people and history.

FAQ

How cold does it get at night?

In our summer months (November-March) it is quite warm at night, around 15-20°C.

In our winter months (May-September) it is a bit colder, usually below 10°C. In June and July it can get very cold, often below zero.

How hot does it get during the day?

In our summer months (November-March) temperatures are usually over 30°C. During the peak of summer temperatures can reach 40°C (or more!).

In winter daytime temperatures are pleasant, usually around 20-25°C.

Do I need a sleeping bag?

In winter you will definitely need a good sleeping bag. If you don't have one of your own, you can hire one from us ($15).

In summer we still recommend that you bring a sleeping bag with you. Not all nights are warm!

I've heard the flies are bad in summer. Is this true?

In the warmer months there are quite a lot of flies around in Central Australia. A lot of people find these to be quite annoying. It is advisable that you bring along a flynet so these little guys don't drive you crazy! You can buy flynets in Alice Springs before you set off on your safari.

What clothes do I need?

In summer shorts and a shirt is all that is needed, plus a jumper if it happens to get a bit chilly at night. Swimwear for a refreshing dip in the Garden of Eden at Kings Canyon is a must - don't forget a towel!

In winter most of the time you can still wear shorts and a shirt during the day. However, you will need to bring warm clothes because it does get cold at night. Long pants, a good jumper, a beanie to keep your head warm and gloves are advisable.

Regardless of the time of year that you are travelling you will need to bring a hat, preferably wide-brimmed.

What else do I need to bring?

As we are camping you will need to be prepared for this. You'll need to bring a flashlight (torch), hat (wide brimmed best), sunscreen, insect repellant, a fly net (summer), any required medication, water bottle (at least 1.5 litres), walking shoes/boots (we do a lot of walking/climbing), warm clothing (winter), sleeping bag, toiletries, swim wear, towel, camera, extra film and a great sense of humour; Travel Voucher/Ticket, BYO wine or beer.

Space is limited, please bring only one small bag per person. Ask at reception of your accommodation for excess baggage storage.

What will I be sleeping in?

You will be sleeping in a swag under the brilliant stars of Central Australia. If you haven't used a swag before, don't worry. Our experienced guides will show you all you need to know to get one of the best night's sleep you've ever had!

What is a swag?

A swag is made out of heavy duty canvas, sewn into a cocoon-like bag providing warmth, comfort and security - the ultimate of all bush beds!

Do I need to bring lots of water?

No. All you need to bring is a water bottle. We will be carrying large containers of chilled water that you can keep on filling your bottle up from.

Do I bring all my luggage with me?

We have limited space in our vehicles. We ask you to only bring a small bag with the things you will need for the duration of your safari.

You should be able to store your excess baggage at your accommodation while you are away.

How physically fit do I have to be?

A reasonable level of fitness is required. On average we walk about 6 km each day.

Most people on our tours are between 18 and 35 years of age, with the average being about 27 years. If you are older than 35 and have a reasonably high level of fitness then you should be fine with the walks. Please let us know at the time of booking if you have any queries regarding your fitness level.

I'm vegetarian. Will that be a problem?

Our menu is designed to cater for both carnivores and vegetarians. Please let us know at the time of booking if you have any special dietary requirements.

How many people will be on each tour?

Wayoutback is a genuine small group operator. All our vehicles are air-conditioned 4WDs, carrying from 9 to 13 people. The number of people on each tour depends on the vehicle that is used.

Where will I be picked up from?

We will pick you up from your place of accommodation on the first morning of the tour. If you are staying at a private address in Alice Springs we will also pick you up.

Can I be picked up from Yulara?

We can pick you up from either the resort at Yulara (Ayers Rock) or the airport at 1 PM. Please advise us at the time of booking (tour must finish in Alice Springs).

Can I finish the tour at Yulara?

We can drop you off at Yulara on the final day of the tour at 1 PM (depending on availablity). Please advise us at the time of booking (tour must start in Alice Springs).

Will I have to help out on the tour?

In order for the tour to run smoothly and to get the maximum amount of time at the attractions it is important for everyone to lend a hand. Collecting firewood, preparing food and washing dishes is the ideal opportunity to get to know everyone.

Safari Guides

At Wayoutback we pride ourselves on the very high standard of our guides. They all have a sound knowledge of our local area focusing on its history, Aboriginal culture, geology and the natural environment. By evaluating our guides' performance after every safari we ensure that a high standard is maintained.

Things You Should Know

Are you young at heart and do you enjoy meeting other travellers? Our safaris are designed to suit active people who enjoy small group dynamics. Due to the small group size, children generally do not mix well with our other clients and for this reason we do not accept children under the age of eight. When you are on a guided walk our guides are responsible for your well being so it is important that your fitness level is equal to the other members of the safari.

Our safaris do require a degree of participation with the preparation of meals, loading and unloading camping equipment, collecting fire wood and the washing of dishes after meals.

The only true way of camping in the outback is sleeping in a swag. This is a canvas bag that zips on both sides with a nice thick camping matress inside that enables you to view the brilliant night sky as you drift off to sleep beside the campfire. For those afflicted with creepy crawly paranoia, tents can be provided, but as our equipment is loaded in Alice Springs prior to departure, we will need to know before this time if you require one.

VEHICLES

Wayoutback Desert Safaris operate late model 4WD Toyota Landcruiser and 4WD Mitsubishi Canters. All our vehicles have been modified or Custom built to suit our harsh Central Australian outback conditions.

We operate six Toyota Landcruiser Troopcarriers that carry a maximum of 9 passengers. The Troopcarriers are a tough all round 4WD, capable of tackling the roughest bush tracks Central Australia can offer. During our tours we usually have a full load of passengers towing a fully laden trailer which, during our off road excursions, end up driving through heavy sand crossing river beds or going over the top of sand dunes. All the vehicles are Turbo charged providing greater engine power and response during the off-road driving.

With the rough terrain and heavy loads we carry, the first thing we change when we purchase a new Troopcarrier is the suspension. The rear leaf springs get replaced with Australian manufactured steel springs that have a couple of extra springs added to beef them up, as well replacing the shock absorbers with a heavy duty variety. All our Landcruiser Troopcarriers come fitted with long range fuel tanks carrying 180 litres of diesel, front bull bars and Haymen Reece tow bars. All windows get a light window tint which assists the hard working air conditioner through our long hot Centralian summers.

All our Troopies tow purpose built 4WD trailers. The same suspension fitted to our vehicles gets fitted to our trailers so that if we break something on one of our Safaris then we can replace the part by removing it from the trailer and fitting it to the vehicle. This includes Toyota hubs, bearings and leaf springs fitted to a heavy duty axle.

Our three 15 seat, 4 litre Intercooled Turbo Mitsubishi Canters are purpose built with a pod that carrys 12 passengers with the driver and 2 passengers seated in the cab. They are fully air conditioned with reclining seats, footrests, a luggage storage area and kitchen space complete with a 100 litre fridge. They can carry 210 litres of fuel, 120 litres of water and come with window tinting, bull bars, spot lights and are built for the bush!

For small group Private Charters we utilise the Turbo Charged Toyota Landcruiser GXL which is Toyota’s luxury 4WD. This vehicle seats 4 adults plus our driver comfortably and can carry a further 3 in the rear (suitable for kids). The suspension gets the full treatment including upgraded torsion bars, shock absorbers, coils springs and airbags. Fitted with an extra long range fuel tank and 50 litre water tank, this vehicle can travel 1000km before needing to be refueled. Hella Predator driving lights are fitted to the bull bar allowing for safe night driving if required. A roof rack carrying the second spare tyre, tool box and recovery equipment as well as any spare luggage has been fitted. A satellite phone is also available.

The trailer for the GXL is again purpose built with the outback in mind. Riding on independent suspension this trailer can carry up to 170 litres of water, 2 further spare tyres and a complete range of camping equipment including swags, tent, tarpaulins, generator (if required), chairs, table, fridge, etc. Because of the remote locations we find this particular vehicle visiting, an extensive range of recovery gear is carried in the trailer. This vehicle and trailer package is set up for a full-on expedition!

All vehicles and trailers are highly maintained with no expense spared. All vehicles have a minor service and inspection every 500km with a major service and inspection every 20,000km. All vehicles are checked over after every tour and comply with the Northern Territory Motor Vehicle Registration rules and specifications for TV (tourist vehicle) plated vehicles.

EQUIPMENT

All our equipment is purchased with quality and durability in mind. Our swags for example are fitted with Dunlop high density foam mattresses. This mattress is the best and most comfortable money can buy. We hire out good quality sleeping bags rated to minus 5° for those cold desert nights; likewise, we hire out lighter weight summer sleeping bags if required for our balmy summer evenings.

For Private Charters our swags are fitted with sheets, pillows and doonas (duvets) for your added comfort. Tents, eskys (Coolers), pots and pans, camp ovens, utensils and crockery are all chosen for presentation and serviceability. While we do venture into the outback, it doesn’t mean we have to rough it!

Your added comfort and safety adds to your overall experience and enjoyment. From our prospective this increases the chance of you recommending us to your friends, family and other adventure travellers. Fortunately for us, it is word-of-mouth that provides us with the majority of our bookings which is a good sign.
